Ancient maritime republic gives the name to the stretch of the peninsula on which it stands: the Amalfi Coast. Amalfi to its unique geographical connotation is proposed to the tourist as enchanted place and difficult to use . All the beaches , except those located in front of the city can be reached by long flights of steps or by sea. In both cases it is a unique experience where the contact point is the nature. From the ninth century, before ( in chronological order) between the maritime republics , rivaled Pisa , Venice and Genoa for control of the Mediterranean Sea . The most famous monument of Amalfi is certainly the Duomo in Arab-Sicilian style and currently dedicated to St. Andrew , the patron saint of the city.
Particularly successful in the history of the city , and still alive in only two remaining mills on the many present and now in ruins, is the paper industry, linked to the production of the valuable paper of Amalfi. In the city it is possible to visit the Museum of Amalfi paper .
Beyond the Piazza del Duomo in the center with the eighteenth-century Fontana del Popolo or of St. Andrew , through a porch , you get to what remains of the Ancient Arsenals where were built the warships of the maritime republic .
A few steps away is the collection and picturesque Piazzetta dei Dogi overlooked by traditional workshops . The discovery of Amalfi would be incomplete if it did not include walks in the labyrinth of narrow streets. The manufacturing of handmade paper, called ” bambagina ,” was one of the oldest activities of Amalfi and , even today, this tradition remains as a sign of identity and culture. The walks to Do.
